Am I Misrepresenting Calvinism?
A respectful response to a common accusation
One of the most common pushbacks to any critique of Calvinism is this:
“You’re misrepresenting Calvinism.”
“That’s a strawman.”
“Real Calvinists don’t believe that.”
If you’ve read through this series and felt that way — this article is for you.
Let’s take a moment to respond honestly, respectfully, and clearly.
Calvinism Is a System — and Systems Have Definitions
This series has not attacked people. It hasn’t tried to judge anyone’s heart.
But it has evaluated a theological system — one that has clear teachings, defined by its own leading voices.
We didn’t make up the doctrines of:
Total Inability
Unconditional Election
Limited Atonement
Irresistible Grace
Perseverance of the Saints
These are the historic five points of Calvinism — summarized as TULIP — and taught by the most widely respected Calvinist teachers.
Let’s look at just a few examples:
What Do Calvinists Actually Teach?
John Piper (Desiring God Ministries)
“God decides; God ultimately decides who will believe and be saved, and who will not.”
— Piper, “Can I Name it And Claim It?”“Irresistible Grace – This means that the resistance that all human beings exert against God every day (Romans 3:10–12; Acts 7:51) is wonderfully overcome at the proper time by God’s saving grace for undeserving rebels whom he chooses freely to save..”
— Piper, Sermon: “What We Believe About the Five Points of Calvinism”
R.C. Sproul (Ligonier Ministries)
“The must-ness of regeneration of which Jesus speaks is necessary for a person to see even the kingdom of God, let alone to enter it. We cannot exercise faith in a kingdom that we cannot enter apart from rebirth.”
— Sproul, “The New Birth”
John MacArthur
“The doctrine of election simply means that God, uninfluenced and before creation, predetermined certain people to be saved..”
— MacArthur, “Election and Predestination: The Sovereignty of God in Salvation”“The way you know that you are saved is by your desire.”
— MacArthur, Q&A Video
So No — This Isn’t a Strawman
We are not critiquing some fringe version of Calvinism.
We are directly responding to what Calvinism’s most visible, respected leaders actually teach — in their own words.
Yes, there are different types of Calvinists (e.g., 3-point, 4-point, 5-point, 7-point, “New Calvinists,” “Reformed Baptists”), but this series focuses on the core teachings that impact:
The gospel message
The assurance of salvation
The invitation to believe
The picture of God’s character
And that’s where the concern lies.
The Real-World Problem
Many Calvinist teachers are honest, devout, and sincere.
But their system, however well-meaning, leads to real issues:
People begin to doubt the gospel is for them
Evangelism slows down or becomes selective
Assurance becomes based on performance, not promise
Believers are told they can’t know if they’re truly elect — until they persevere to the end
This isn’t theoretical. It’s happening in churches, sermons, and conversations right now.
When a System Affects the Gospel, It Must Be Addressed
Many theological disagreements are secondary — but when a system redefines or restricts the gospel, it’s no longer just a difference of opinion.
If a doctrine:
Tells people they might not be loved by God
Teaches that Christ only died for some
Removes the whosoever will invitation
Replaces “believe and be saved” with “wait and see if you’re elect”
Then it is not harmless — it is dangerous.
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel…” – Galatians 1:6
Paul confronted distortions of the gospel — even when they came from religious people.
We must do the same today, with love and truth.
Is It Wrong to Critique a System?
No — in fact, it’s biblical.
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…” – 1 John 4:1
We are called to test every teaching — even those that come from respected sources.
And if a system distorts the gospel or undermines assurance, it must be examined in the light of Scripture.
The Heart of This Series
We are not trying to mock, twist, or tear down Calvinists.
We are trying to:
Defend the gospel of salvation for whosoever
Uplift the simplicity of believing on Jesus Christ
Encourage struggling believers who feel confused, left out, or afraid
Expose error lovingly, so others can see the truth
If something in this series has been unclear or seems misrepresented, you’re welcome to examine it more closely.
But the core message is simple:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” – Acts 16:31
A Final Word
It’s not unloving to examine doctrine. It’s not misrepresentation to quote real teachers.
This series exists not to defeat Calvinism — but to lift up the true gospel:
One that is free and open
One that brings peace and clarity
One that points to Jesus Christ — not a theological system
And that gospel is worth defending.
