Ben and the Boots from Grandpa
A cozy winter tale inspired by the Day 3 & Day 4 prompts
This short story is part of Tamsin G.’s Cozy Quill Tales Winter Prompt Challenge.
Today’s piece brings together Day 3: “These enchanted snow boots were made for traveling” and Day 4: “The legends say a living animal made from ice appears only to those who need comfort.”
A story of a boy, his grandfather’s boots, a winter village, and a gentle moment of courage.
I hope this story feels warm, kind, and encouraging to young readers.
THE BOOTS FROM GRANDPA
(A short story for children)
Ben loved winter. He loved the bright snow, the cold air, and how his boots made a crunchy sound when he walked.
But his very favorite boots were the ones Grandpa gave him.
Grandpa had placed them in Ben’s hands and said with a smile,
“These are good boots, Ben.
They keep your feet warm,
they help you walk far,
and they remind you to be brave.”
Ben wore them everywhere. They were not magic, but they made him feel strong, like he could go on any adventure.
So one morning, Ben tied the laces tight and said, “Okay, boots. Let’s see where we can go today.”
And he set off.
THE ICE BEAR
Ben walked until he reached the small village square. Every winter, the people made shiny ice sculptures, little birds, tall trees, and animals of all kinds.
Ben’s favorite was the ice bear. It looked big and gentle, just like Grandpa.
Ben touched the bear’s cold paw. He suddenly missed Grandpa a lot.
He blinked… and something strange happened.
The ice bear moved.
Just a little. Its head tilted. Its eyes seemed warm, even though they were made of ice.
Ben did not hear a voice, but he felt the words in his heart, soft and strong:
“Be brave, Ben.
Grandpa loved you very much.
And many wonderful adventures are waiting for you.”
Ben’s eyes filled with tears, but he wiped them quickly.
A warm courage settled inside him.
Ben squared his shoulders and lifted his chin.
A brave look settled on his face.
He turned toward the snowy road and stepped forward,
crunch by crunch,
ready for whatever came next.
