John 10:26 – “Not My Sheep? Not My Elect?”
What does Jesus mean when He says some people aren’t His sheep?
The verse:
“But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.”
— John 10:26, KJV
This verse is often used by Calvinists to argue that:
“Only the elect (God’s sheep) can believe. If someone doesn’t believe, it’s because they weren’t chosen to be saved.”
But is that what Jesus meant?
Let’s slow down, look at the context, and see what the Bible actually teaches.
What Calvinists Claim It Means
They interpret it like this:
The “sheep” are the elect, chosen before the foundation of the world
Jesus came to save only those sheep (John 10:11)
If someone doesn’t believe, it’s because they were never part of the elect
Therefore, faith is the result of being one of the sheep—not the way to become one
In short, Calvinists say:
“You believe because you were chosen. You don’t believe because you weren’t.”
But let’s look at what’s really happening in John 10.
Who Is Jesus Talking To?
Jesus is speaking to a group of unbelieving Jews who were questioning Him:
“Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.” – John 10:24
Jesus responds that He has told them—but they refuse to believe.
“I told you, and ye believed not…” – v.25
Then He says:
“But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep…” – v.26
So the real issue is: Why aren’t they His sheep?
Read the Whole Passage: John 10:25–30
Let’s let Jesus explain what makes someone one of His sheep:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
Being one of His sheep is not about being on a secret list.
It’s about hearing, believing, and following Jesus.
These Jews rejected Jesus — that’s why they weren’t His sheep.
Compare with John 1:11–12
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” – John 1:11–12
This proves:
Being part of God’s people is not automatic
The door is open to all who believe
Belief comes first, and then you become one of His own
What Makes You One of Jesus’ Sheep?
Not a secret election.
Not a mystical calling.
Not being “on the list.”
According to Jesus:
“They shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” – John 10:16
Jesus is calling — and those who hear and respond become part of His flock.
Just like:
Sheep come when they recognize the shepherd’s voice
Believers come when they recognize the truth of the gospel
What John 10:26 Does Not Teach
That some people are born as “non-sheep” with no chance to believe
That you must be one of the elect before you can respond
That God only loves or died for a limited group
Jesus Invites All
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” – John 12:32
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden…” – Matthew 11:28
He doesn’t just call the sheep.
His voice goes out to all — and those who believe become His.
A Simple Analogy
Imagine a shepherd calling to a group of sheep scattered across a field.
Some hear and come to him.
Others ignore his voice and wander off.
He doesn’t say, “Only the pre-chosen ones can hear me.”
He calls all of them.
But only those who listen and come become part of His flock.
A Final Word
John 10:26 doesn’t teach that God made some people unbelievers.
It teaches that those who refuse to believe don’t belong to Jesus — because they reject His voice.
But those who do hear and believe?
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
And I give unto them eternal life…” – John 10:27–28
The invitation is open.
The gospel is calling.
Will you believe and become one of His sheep?
