John 6:44 – “No Man Can Come Unless…”
Does this verse teach Calvinism — or something else entirely?
Here’s the verse Calvinists love to quote:
“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
— John 6:44, KJV
To many people, this verse sounds like it supports Calvinism.
Let’s look at what Calvinists say it means — and then what the verse actually teaches when we read it in context.
What Calvinists Say It Means
Calvinists claim:
No one can come to Jesus unless God draws them
God only draws the elect (a pre-chosen group)
This drawing is irresistible — if God draws you, you will come
If you don’t come to Christ, it’s because God didn’t draw you — and never intended to
So in their view, this verse teaches that only the elect can come, and everyone else is simply left out.
But is that what Jesus was actually saying?
What the Verse Actually Says
Let’s read it again:
“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” – John 6:44
Yes — Jesus says no one can come unless the Father draws them.
But the real question is:
Who does the Father draw?
Only a few? Or everyone?
Let’s let the Bible answer that.
John 12:32 – Who Gets Drawn?
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” – John 12:32, KJV
Jesus clears it up later in the same gospel.
He says He will draw all men to Himself — not just a preselected few.
This matches what Paul said too:
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” – Titus 2:11
So yes — no one can come unless drawn,
but the Bible says everyone is drawn!
What About the Context of John 6?
Let’s read more of the chapter.
Verse 40:
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life…” – John 6:40
Jesus is offering life to every one who believes — not just a hidden group.
Verse 45:
“It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.” – John 6:45
Who comes?
Those who hear and learn from the Father.
God teaches. He draws. But He doesn’t force.
You have a choice to listen — or reject what you’ve heard.
The Key Truth
Jesus is not saying:
“Only a few can come because only a few are drawn.”
He’s saying:
“You can’t come on your own. You need to be drawn. And I draw all men.”
The drawing is real. The offer is real. But it’s not forced — it requires a response.
A Simple Analogy
Imagine a teacher calling a class to come forward.
She says:
“No student can come up unless I call them.”
Then she calls the whole class.
Some come. Some don’t.
The problem isn’t the calling — it’s the response.
That’s what’s happening in John 6. Jesus is calling, drawing, and teaching. But some believe, and others walk away.
What This Verse Does Not Teach
John 6:44 does not say:
God only draws the elect
The drawing cannot be resisted
You must be born again before you can believe
If you don’t come, it’s because God didn’t want you
That’s Calvinism — not Scripture.
What This Means for You
You don’t need to wonder,
“Am I being drawn?”
If you’re hearing the Word of God…
If you’re thinking about Jesus…
If you’re being invited to believe the gospel…
That is the drawing of the Father.
The question isn’t whether He’s drawing you.
The question is whether you’ll believe.
“He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” – John 6:47
A Final Word
John 6:44 isn’t a secret verse about election.
It’s a call to come to Jesus through the truth of God’s Word.
God draws all.
Many resist.
But those who believe are raised up — just like He promised.
The choice is real. The invitation is open.
The gospel is for you.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
