Self-Help without this One Key is like Washing Tombstones
What's the Real Key to Life?
Self-help has always been a big thing here in the US. People have been looking for ways to improve their lives by reading self-help books, going to seminars, and getting coaching. Yes, their life will definitely improve. They will find some satisfaction and hope to make it in this temporal life. I've even seen self-help gurus begin to focus on their spiritual lives. They seek ancient writers and Stoicism, all hoping to scratch the itch of the purpose of their lives. Trying to make it in a world where if you don't succeed you'll fail and descend into obscurity.
What's the Problem?
The problem is that everyone is in the rat race trying to make it. They are striving to achieve and to make themselves better, but it's simply washing tombstones and putting makeup on the dead. This might seem harsh. It is. But reality can be tough to face. We all stand before the events and circumstances before us hoping that we'll just make it through. Hoping that we'll be able to overcome this next thing.
Because the battles don't stop. They keep coming. One after another. Just when you think you've beaten one enemy, the next one comes barreling forward. Bigger boss after bigger boss comes before you. Yes, you gain some skills, and yes, you're leveling up, but to what end?
What about the End?
Have you thought about the end? Have you thought about what comes after every level and every boss has been beaten? Have you thought about what happens when you achieve all the success you've set out to do when you're laying on your bed at the end of your life realizing you can't take anything with you?
What then?
All the leveling up you do in this life will mean nothing if you can't take it with you.
So what can you do?
Face the reality that self-help is just like washing tombstones and putting makeup on the dead. Once you've accepted that you can't take anything with you, you've now got the opportunity to reassess your current trajectory. If you can see down the road that you can't take anything with you, then it's time to find a new path, a new way, one that will allow you to live forever and take your winnings with you.
What is that path?
The Path is actually a person. His name is Jesus. He actually came over 2000 years ago to show us the way. He gave insights on this life and the way we live. He pointed out that all of our struggles to make it were ultimately futile, but with Him at the helm there was hope. All the raging thoughts, out of control, driving you to do things you don't want to do could be silenced with Him leading. All the brokenness of the breakups could be restored. All the wounds of trauma could be healed.
And then He'd even give you purpose, a destination, a hope, a passion to live for. You've been searching for meaning, trying to find it in everything the world has promised, but it's all come up empty. You ask, "why has it always come up empty? I've been drinking everything they told me that would satisfy my thirst, but I'm still so thirsty."
It's because you've been drinking from dry polluted thermos bottles.
He promises to give you water without end, but it only comes from Him.
So the path is Jesus. If you haven't received Jesus as Lord of your life and received the new life that He wants to give you, then today is the day. Receive Him as Lord of your life today and turn from everything the world has to offer. He will forgive you of all of your sins, restore your relationship with Him, and give you a new life.
Welcome to the journey. This is the ultimate path to leveling up.
