Titus 3:5 – Regeneration Before Faith?
Does this verse teach that you’re born again before you believe?
Here’s the verse Calvinists often quote:
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
— Titus 3:5, KJV
Calvinists use this verse to argue:
“See? Regeneration is what saves you. That means you’re born again before you believe. Faith comes after God makes you alive.”
This is part of their claim that spiritually “dead” people can’t believe unless they’re first made alive by God — that regeneration precedes faith.
But is that really what Paul is teaching?
Let’s walk through it simply, in context, and with clear Scripture.
What Calvinists Claim
They interpret Titus 3:5 like this:
“Regeneration” = being born again
God regenerates people before they believe, because the dead can’t believe
Faith is the result of new birth, not the cause of it
Therefore, only those whom God has chosen and regenerated can believe
But this turns the gospel upside-down.
Let’s look at what the Bible really says.
What Does “Regeneration” Mean?
The word “regeneration” means new birth — a spiritual transformation, a renewing by the Holy Spirit.
It’s closely connected to salvation, but how and when it happens matters.
Titus 3:5 says we are saved:
Not by works
According to God’s mercy
By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost
But does that mean regeneration comes before faith?
Let’s look at the context.
What Does the Passage Actually Say?
Look at the full thought in Titus 3:4–7:
“But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,
by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
— Titus 3:4–7, KJV
This shows:
God saves us because of His mercy
He saves us through the Spirit’s renewing work
We are justified by His grace
But it doesn’t say regeneration comes before faith.
In fact, it doesn’t mention faith directly — but Paul makes it clear elsewhere how justification happens.
Compare with Other Scriptures
Ephesians 1:13
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
You hear the gospel
You believe
Then you’re sealed by the Holy Spirit
John 1:12–13
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Which were born, not of blood… but of God.”
You receive Christ
You believe on His name
Then you’re born of God
Galatians 3:26
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
Faith is the means — not the result — of becoming God’s child.
What Titus 3:5 Does Not Say
It does not say regeneration comes before belief
It does not say faith is impossible before new birth
It does not say only the elect can be saved
It simply says:
We are saved by God’s mercy, through the Holy Spirit’s renewing work — not our works.
The Holy Spirit regenerates us at the moment of salvation — when we respond to the gospel in faith.
A Simple Analogy
Think of salvation like entering a new life:
The gospel message is the invitation
Faith is opening the door
Regeneration is stepping through and receiving new life
You don’t get the new life before you respond.
You get it when you respond.
A Final Word
Titus 3:5 is a beautiful verse about God’s mercy — not about a secret order of salvation.
The Bible consistently teaches:
Believe, and thou shalt be saved. – Acts 16:31
Whosoever believeth in him should not perish… – John 3:16
By grace are ye saved through faith… – Ephesians 2:8
You don’t need to be born again before you believe.
You are born again when you believe.
That’s the truth. That’s the gospel. And that’s good news for all.
