Top 5 Calvinist Objections — And How to Answer Them
Simple, biblical replies to common Calvinist claims
If you’ve ever questioned Calvinism or shared the true gospel, you’ve probably heard these objections.
They can sound convincing — even intimidating — at first.
But when we go back to Scripture, they fall apart.
Here are 5 of the most common Calvinist arguments — and how to respond to each one using the King James Bible.
Objection 1: “Are you saying man saves himself?”
Calvinists often ask this when you say people must choose to believe.
Response:
No — salvation is completely God’s work, but it’s offered to all.
Believing the gospel isn’t “saving yourself”; it’s trusting the Savior.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” – Acts 16:31
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8
We don’t save ourselves — we simply receive the salvation God provides.
Objection 2: “Then God isn’t really sovereign.”
They argue: “If people can reject God, then He’s not in control.”
Response:
God’s sovereignty means He has all power — not that He forces all outcomes.
He chose to give people the freedom to believe or reject.
“O Jerusalem… how often would I have gathered thy children together… and ye would not!” – Matthew 23:37
God is King and Lord — and He as a King and Lord chose to let people respond.
Objection 3: “How can dead sinners believe?”
They say: “If you’re dead in sin, you’re like a corpse — unable to respond.”
Response:
“Dead in sin” means separated from God, not physically or mentally incapable.
Sinners can still hear, understand, and respond to God’s Word.
“Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” – Ephesians 5:14
“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” – Romans 10:17
The gospel itself is the power that brings life — when believed.
Objection 4: “Isn’t it pride to say you chose God?”
They argue that choosing Christ is boasting in yourself.
Response:
The Bible says believing is the opposite of pride — it’s humble dependence.
“God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” – James 4:6
“That no flesh should glory in his presence… he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1:29, 31
Receiving a gift doesn’t make you proud — it makes you grateful.
Objection 5: “Didn’t Jesus say, ‘Ye believe not because ye are not my sheep’?”
They point to John 10:26 to say unbelievers aren’t elect.
Response:
Jesus was speaking to Jews who had rejected Him repeatedly.
They weren’t His sheep because they refused to follow.
“My sheep hear my voice… and they follow me.” – John 10:27
“But ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” – John 5:40
Sheep are those who listen and follow — not a secret list.
A Final Word
You don’t need a theology degree to answer Calvinist claims.
You just need the Word of God — read plainly, in context, and believed fully.
The truth is simple:
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” – Romans 10:13
Let the Bible speak. It’s stronger than any system.
