Verses That Don’t Fit Calvinism
Scriptures that contradict Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Unconditional Election
Calvinism is a system that claims to be based entirely on Scripture. But when we compare its core doctrines to the plain reading of the King James Bible, certain verses simply don’t fit.
Below are 15 key verses that clearly contradict Calvinist teachings — especially Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Unconditional Election.
Each verse is followed by a short explanation to help clarify the contrast.
Verses That Contradict Limited Atonement
(The Calvinist claim that Jesus died only for the elect)
1. 1 John 2:2
“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Jesus didn’t just die for believers — He died for the whole world.
2. 1 Timothy 2:5–6
“…the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all…”
A ransom for “all” cannot mean only the elect. It means all.
3. Hebrews 2:9
“…that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”
Christ died for every man — not just a limited group.
4. Isaiah 53:6
“All we like sheep have gone astray… and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
The same “all” that sinned are the “all” Christ died for.
5. 2 Peter 2:1
“…even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”
Christ bought even those who end up destroyed — showing He died for more than just the saved.
Verses That Contradict Unconditional Election
(The Calvinist claim that God chooses individuals to be saved apart from anything they do or believe)
6. 2 Thessalonians 2:13
“God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.”
Election is through belief of the truth — not before it.
7. Ephesians 1:13
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth… after that ye believed, ye were sealed…”
Salvation and sealing happen after belief — not before.
8. Romans 10:13
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Salvation is offered to whosoever, not a pre-selected few.
9. 1 Timothy 2:4
“Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”
God’s will is that all be saved — not only the elect.
10. John 3:16
“For God so loved the world… that whosoever believeth in him should not perish…”
The invitation is universal — “whosoever” excludes no one.
Verses That Contradict Irresistible Grace
(The Calvinist claim that the elect cannot resist God’s call to salvation)
11. Matthew 23:37
“…how often would I have gathered thy children together… and ye would not!”
Jesus wanted to save them — but they resisted.
12. Acts 7:51
“Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.”
God’s grace was resisted — proving it is not irresistible.
13. John 12:32
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.”
Jesus draws all, not just the elect — and not all respond.
14. Proverbs 1:24–25
“Because I have called, and ye refused… ye have set at nought all my counsel.”
God called — they refused. His grace was offered, but rejected.
15. 2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord… is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
If God wants all to repent, grace must be resistible — because not all do.
A Final Word
The verses above don’t fit Calvinism — because Calvinism doesn’t fit the Bible.
These are not obscure texts or debatable phrases. They are clear, plain statements from God’s Word that reveal:
Jesus died for all
Salvation is offered to all
God wants all to be saved
People can resist His grace
Belief comes before new birth
“Let God be true, but every man a liar.” – Romans 3:4
Let Scripture speak — and let the gospel be good news for whosoever will.
